What To Do When the Heat Goes Out

Call it Murphy’s Law, or maybe just a little bad luck, but we sometimes see heat pump issues in Waterloo during the colder seasons, when they’re needed the most to keep you toasty. While you know the team at Cronin-Verheul Heating & A/C Ltd will forever be there ASAP when you need us for a heat pump repair, there are some things you can do to double check a repair is necessary and save yourself some cash if it’s not. We’ve compiled this checklist of things to try before you give us a call.

  1. It may sound ridiculous, but make sure everything is switched “on”. We’ve been to several calls only to find the thermostat or the heat pump itself is switched off.
    • Look at your thermostat to guarantee it’s on, fixed to the correct temperature and isn’t switched to cool.
    • Then try swapping out the battery, if it has one.
    • If everything looks right, check your furnace switch (check your manual if you’re unsure where it is) and inspect your fuses and circuit breaker.
    • Confirm that your gas is on.
  2. If the furnace still hasn’t switched on, return to your thermostat.
    • If it’s a programmable model, confirm that it’s displaying the proper time. If it thinks it’s morning when it’s actually night, it may not turn your heat on because it doesn’t understand that you’re home.
  3. Is a blockage causing your furnace to not work?
    • Check your air filters to ensure they’re not blocking things up.
    • Do you have any obstructed ducts, vents or cool air intakes?
    • Are all supply registers open?
    • Is your exhaust flue unobstructed?

If you’ve moved through this checklist and you’re still without heat, call Cronin-Verheul Heating & A/C Ltd at 519-664-0600 or arrange an appointment online and we’ll get your home back to the welcoming and cozy place it should be.
